Dear Community Member:
"Transitioning" is the power word across Ohio in Adult Education programs. Since moving to the Board of Regents, from the Ohio State Department of Education, helping student's transition from passing the GED (457 graduates last year) to training or postsecondary education is a priority. Facilitating transitions has several phases including instruction and counseling.

INSTRUCTION
During the 2010-2011 school year, Middletown's Adult Education program was selected to receive one of six Innovation Grants in Ohio. Teachers wrote 150 contextualized lessons, as part of the grant. These lessons were especially created to help students transition to postsecondary education or training with emphasis on specific careers and skills.

CONTEXTUALIZED LESSONS
One Example of contextualized lessons would be implemented for a student who is interested in a health care career and needs to pass the GED. There are lessons especially written for him/her to learn the vocabulary and math skills necessary not only to pass the GED, but also better prepare him/her to enter a career pathway in health care.

CAREER TRANSITION COACH
An integral part of assisting students in the transition process is counseling. That's why Middletown hired, through the grant, a Career Transition Coach to work with students regarding finding financial aide, setting smart goals, and deciding their career pathway. The Career Transition Coach administers the Workkeys test and Kuder Journey, a test that helps a student determine their skills, interests, and in what kind of job they would be best. You may have taken a similar test in high school; however, this test is designed for adults.

PARTNERSHIPS
In addition to transitioning students, partnerships have added a new dimension to the program. Thanks to United Ways' "Place Matters," and Miami University Middletown, incentives have been available at two GED preparation sites. Named "Lunch and Learn," the students not only receive food cards for extended attendance, payment for their official test, but also lunch every day as they learn. These classes are held at the Salvation Army and Head Start, Early Learning Center.

Additional GED class sites include Butler Tech, Manchester School, St. Paul's United Church of Christ, and Oxford's Adult Learning Center. ESOL, English classes for speakers of other Language, are offered in Middletown, Oxford, West Chester and Fairfield.
